One-on-one instruction, not an answer service

Special Ed Resource provides online math tutoring for children and adults with learning differences. Our tutors are certified in special education. The conversation begins with the learner’s current work and the kind of support they are seeking.

Bring the topic or course name when relevant. A general math service description is not a guarantee that every advanced course or examination has a specialist available. Confirm the specific subject and educator fit.

Look at four parts of the task

The following is a conversation checklist, not a diagnostic test or a prescribed teaching program. You can use it to describe a recent assignment without deciding why the difficulty occurred.

• Meaning: What does the problem ask, and what information matters?
• Approach: What step does the learner choose first?
• Recording: Can they show the work so they can follow it later?
• Checking: What do they do when the answer seems unexpected?

Word problems: separate reading from calculation

Illustrative example: a learner completes a calculation when it is written with symbols but pauses when the same task appears inside a paragraph. Note whether rereading the question, explaining a word or identifying the requested quantity changes what happens.

That observation can guide a discussion. It does not establish a diagnosis or prove that reading is the only difficulty. The educator needs to consider the actual work rather than assume every missed word problem needs more calculation practice.

When dyscalculia is part of the conversation

If the learner has an existing dyscalculia diagnosis or a recommendation related to math learning, describe the academic concern and relevant recommendations when discussing fit. This tutoring service does not diagnose dyscalculia or provide clinical treatment.

We keep the focus on the learner’s tasks rather than assigning a preset course from a label. Ask about relevant educator experience, how a starting point would be established and what information would help you discuss progress.

Keep a short record of help, not just answers

For a few examples you choose to discuss, record what the learner did independently and where a prompt was needed. An answer completed with substantial help and an answer completed independently tell different stories.

Illustrative note: “Chose the operation without help; needed a reminder to record the second step.” This is more useful for a conversation than simply counting an assignment as finished. It is not a claim about an actual student or an official assessment method.

Adults can bring practical academic goals

If you are an adult, describe the math you want to use or understand. You might be revisiting foundational work or asking about support for a course. Confirm the scope rather than assuming tutoring includes credential preparation or a particular college subject.

Start with fit and clear expectations

The free tutoring consultation is for goals and questions about the online process. Later discovery, matching and instructional work inform a learning plan. We do not guarantee test results or mastery on a fixed schedule.

For a child, explain relevant school supports and what you hope additional instruction would address. Private tutoring is separate from the school’s IEP process and from the paid parent IEP consultation.
