Describe the reading task, not just the reading level

Special Ed Resource provides live one-on-one online reading instruction with tutors certified in special education. Children and adults can discuss an individual starting point rather than a one-size-fits-all course.

Bring a practical observation. Perhaps unfamiliar words interrupt reading, a familiar passage is easier than a new one, or the learner can read aloud but finds questions about meaning difficult. These examples describe questions to investigate, not a way to diagnose a disability.

• Words: Which words need help, and what kind of help?
• Connected text: What happens when words become a sentence or paragraph?
• Meaning: Can the learner describe the important information in their own words?
• Purpose: Is the goal schoolwork, personal reading or an adult academic task?

An example of making a goal clearer

Illustrative example: “Reading homework takes a long time” is the concern. A more useful observation is “My child reads the paragraph but needs me to reread each question and find the matching sentence.” That gives the educator something concrete to explore.

It does not tell us whether the next instructional priority is reading the question, understanding its vocabulary, returning to the text or something else. Keep that question open until the educator has had an opportunity to work with the learner.

Prepare a small reading snapshot

You do not need a large folder for the first conversation. Make a short note about a recent reading task and what happened. Keep identifying student information and detailed school records out of public inquiry fields.

• What was the learner trying to read?
• What could they do without help?
• Where did help become necessary?
• What did the helper actually do?
• What would you like the learner to try more independently?

Separate general reading support from a specialist requirement

If you are looking for a particular reading approach, bring its name into the matching conversation. Certification in special education does not establish that every tutor has identical training in every method.

For New Mexico adults and families comparing options

For a child already receiving reading support, list what is happening at school and the question you want private instruction to address. Private tutoring does not amend an IEP. Questions about the school plan belong in the separate IEP support route.
