Find the writing step that needs instruction

A finished assignment can hide very different needs. One learner has plenty to say but cannot organize a paragraph. Another can plan a response but needs help constructing sentences. A third wants to strengthen an already clear piece by choosing more precise words. Writing support does not require a story of failure.

SER’s published writing scope includes sentence structure, paragraph organization, grammar and essays. Our tutors are certified in special education. The broader tutoring service supports preschool through adults; the writing goal and educator match depend on the individual, not an assumed level based on age.

• Planning: decide what the reader needs to know and put ideas in a useful order.
• Drafting: express an idea in sentences and connect related ideas.
• Revision: check whether the meaning is clear before focusing on surface corrections.
• Editing: work on the conventions relevant to the current goal rather than marking every possible error.

Instruction, not an assignment-completion service

The aim is to help the learner make writing decisions, not have an adult produce the finished work. The Institute of Education Sciences elementary writing guide recommends teaching the writing process and foundational writing skills. That guidance supports separating the steps; it does not establish results for SER or prescribe the same lesson for every age.

Illustrative example: a learner wants to explain why a favorite game is enjoyable. Start with one opinion and a reason. Read the draft together and ask what a reader would need explained. Revise one unclear sentence, then check one agreed convention. This is an example of a possible task, not a customer story or a promised lesson sequence.

Dysgraphia: keep academic support and therapy distinct

If dysgraphia is part of the learner’s history, explain which writing tasks are difficult and what supports already help. SER publicly describes dysgraphia-informed tutoring, including organization of written expression and typing as an access option. This page offers academic writing support, not occupational therapy, a diagnostic evaluation or treatment for dysgraphia.

Separate the content goal from the way an answer is recorded. Discuss whether the learner is practicing sentence construction, organizing ideas or working on another agreed skill. Typing, dictation or a school-approved accommodation may be topics for the conversation, but no particular tool or online compatibility is promised before checking.

Do not use a tutoring inquiry to decide whether a learner has dysgraphia. Concerns about physical discomfort or motor access belong with the appropriate school or clinical professional. We do not promise pencil-grip correction, motor rehabilitation or removal of a disability through tutoring.

Use a sample to understand the starting point

For a child, parent discovery and a conversation with the educator help establish expectations. For an adult, the learner’s own priorities lead the discussion. Introductory instructional work then informs a starting plan; the free consultation is not a completed assessment or learning plan.

A useful observation records the task, what the learner produced independently and what help was provided. An outline supplied by an adult and an outline created independently are different starting points, even if the final paragraphs look similar. Discuss a sample privately if needed; do not send school records through a general public inquiry.

• Where did help become necessary: ideas, order, sentences, spelling or recording the response?
• Which support helped, and what could the learner then do independently?
• What would a useful next step look like in another writing task?

Talk through online fit and next steps

All SER tutoring is online; we do not offer an in-person New Mexico office or home visits. Explain how the learner currently writes and shares work, and discuss any participation support before deciding whether this format fits.

The first tutoring consultation is free. Instruction is paid, with current arrangements and fees to be confirmed before enrollment. There is no guaranteed grade, essay score, educator opening or time to mastery.
