What the tutoring process adds

Special Ed Resource begins with discovery about the learner, including strengths, interests, previous instruction and the family’s priorities. Tutors are certified in special education and work live online, one-on-one.

Relevant school information can inform that conversation. Matching and introductory instructional work help establish a starting plan for discussion with the family. We do not assume that a diagnosis or a list of goals tells us everything about how the learner approaches a task.

Choose the part of the plan relevant to your question

Federal IDEA regulations describe an IEP as including present levels, measurable annual goals, how progress will be measured and when progress reports will be provided. Those components can help you locate the information behind a concern.

For a tutoring conversation, start with the academic question you want to address. You might describe a reading task, a math concept or the amount of prompting needed to complete work. You do not need to recite the entire document in the first call.

• What can the learner currently do?
• Which academic task matters most right now?
• What supports are already helpful?
• What would you like additional instruction to address?
• What information would help you discuss a proposed learning plan?

Keep school decisions and private instruction separate

A private tutoring plan does not itself revise a school IEP, establish eligibility or authorize services at school. Do not interpret a tutor’s suggested practice activity as an approved IEP amendment.

This New Mexico site makes no state-program approval or reimbursement claim. An existing IEP does not make this private tutoring offer automatically free. If payment by another organization is essential, verify the actual arrangement before enrolling.

Use observations without overstating them

Illustrative example: a learner answers questions after a passage is read together in tutoring but needs different support on an independent classroom task. Both observations can be useful, but they do not necessarily measure the same thing.

When discussing work, note the material, setting and assistance given. Do not present private-session success as proof that a school goal has been met or that an accommodation is no longer needed. The progress guide provides a simple way to organize questions.

Share records deliberately

Begin with a plain-language description of the concern. If documents are needed later, confirm the appropriate private sharing process and send only what is relevant. Do not place IEPs, diagnoses, student identifiers or full school records in a public inquiry field.

The free tutoring consultation is for fit and process. It is not an advance document review, legal consultation or school meeting. Parent IEP guidance has a separate paid phone-consultation and membership route.

When the question is about the school plan

If you need clarification about a school goal or progress report, start with the school team. New Mexico’s Office of Special Education provides official resources and procedural safeguards; Parents Reaching Out also provides family education support.
